I can actually hear the fast-talking announcer man saying this in my head:
"We interrupt this summer's plans...with a broken foot!! All previous plans are now kaput, down the drain, and hasta luego."
I give you Exhibit A:
Exhibit A--come here!!! Oh, hang on--I'll come to you...
Exhibit A happens when a fearless 10-year-old falls from 4 feet up, and lands on the hard dirt sitting on her foot. She heard her foot "pop," she says. Yikesy, that gives me the willies. Thankfully, though, only 3 cracked bones, and no torn ligaments. And an air cast, and not a plaster one? Hallelujah and pass the biscuits! She can take a shower and swim in a pool!!! (Hopping on one foot, of course)
Ah, but doesn't COLD STONE make it all better? (Please note the clever product placement!) She pretty much could have had anything she wanted today...but she wanted Cold Stone! 'At's my girl!
So...those previous plans of dropping her off at summer camp today? Bye bye. Yes, there were break-my-heart tears from the huge disappointment, but the chocolate shake did comfort her a little.
Now, for PLAN B...
Today, over at We are THAT Family, Kristen is holding a "Mom, I'm bored" Summer Edition of Works for Me Wednesday. I thought it would be fun to jot down my idea--you know, PLAN B--and join her linky party.
So, Plan B...
Actually, I cannot take any credit whatsoever. My daughter, ole hop-along herself, has initiated this plan.
She is MAKING A MUSIC VIDEO this summer. And, I sure hope it turns out the way she's describing--because it is BRILLIANTLY FUNNY. (In my opinion--the very best kind of brilliant!)
I won't tell you what the video is about, because I DO HOPE to post it here when it is complete, sometime this summer. But, I will tell you it is a spoof on 2 very popular viral YouTube videos. It is a Christian spoof, of sorts. It is so clever that I am totally into helping her plan it out. But, I regret to confess, her ideas are waaaaay better than mine.
So, this will be our golden ticket for beating those boring moments--talk about the video, and work together as a family implementing it. Here are a few ways we're trying to make it happen:
(These 10 items take place over a period of time. #1- #3 have taken 2 weeks)
1. Brainstorm as a family about the overall idea
2. Have my daughter write down, sketch out those ideas she likes best.
3. Once they're down on paper, talk again about those ideas and further refine them.
4. Type up the best ideas, and keep refining until we get a "final written copy" of the video sketch.
5. Talk details as a family...who will be in the video, how will we procure music, who will film it, who will edit...?
6. Make decisions about #5, and type up these details.
7. Make up a timeline for implementing those decisions in #6.
8. And one by one, start DOING each stepof the timeline...as a family.
9. When the video is complete, have a Premiere Showing and invite family and friends. Make it a party!!!
10. Upload funny video here, and share it with you. *Smile*
If we actually get to complete those 10 steps above, guess what? My daughter LEARNS HOW to map out and complete a big project! BONUS!!!
Don't have a brilliant idea for a music video?
A similar idea, that we were able to accomplish last year is to make a musical picture slide show. My dad's 70th birthday was coming up last year. My daughter had recently learned how to use Windows Movie Maker and wanted to try it out. She made a musical slide show of special pictures from his life for my dad's party. It was AMAZING. The really great part was how our whole family was involved
...in gathering the old pictures
...reminiscing about them
...sneakily asking my dad about old songs he used to love
...uploading his favorite old songs from iTunes for the video
...scanning the old pictures and grouping them in order
The finished product blew me away! I had no idea we would be able to make such a quality slideshow--with music--so easily. Sometimes, technology has to hit me over the head for me to become aware of it. Maybe most of you already work with Windows Movie Maker or iMovie, but this was a first for me. It was very user-friendly.
Plus, it was a family project we will never forget--and we have a DVD of my dad's life, to the tunes of HIS songs. Love it, love it, love it!!!!
Do you have a family milestone coming up? A special birthday? Or, maybe just create a picture slideshow of your family's life so far... Have more than 1 child that can do the video editing? Have each create a slide show using the same pictures--and then watch both at your Premiere Party and compare/contrast them. Either way--you've got a precious family momento that lasts forever!
Summertime projects that beat boredom AND promote creativity and learning??? It just doesn't get any better for me!
How about you? What fun things do you do to beat the summer boredom?
