Sometimes, you just need to make turkey sandwiches

Several years ago, a friend of ours called during Thanksgiving weekend and said he needed our help.  He had already started driving the several hundred miles towards our home, and was really hoping he could stay with us for a while.

We told him, "Of course" and said he could stay as long as he needed.  

We got the guest room ready, and waited--not really knowing how we'd find our friend once he arrived.

His arrival seemed pretty normal.  He pulled up in his Texas-sized truck, wearing his usual jeans and cowboy boots.  We hugged and exchanged the typical "how was your trip?" small talk.  We made our way to the kitchen table, where I'm sure I offered him something to eat and drink.

There, at our kitchen table, our friend explained in a quiet voice how messed up he'd gotten.  He told us that he'd checked himself out of rehab, and started driving towards Branson for help.  

Now, I should tell you a couple of things here.  First of all, I am keeping much of this story vague--because it is not my story to tell.  The only reason I even mentioned his checking himself out of rehab is so I can BRAG on how AMAZINGLY BRAVE he is!  I'm not sure I've ever been PROUDER of someone than I am of this friend, who has been sober for several years now.  (I wish you could see the big goober smile on my face as I write these words!  See?  I'm proud.)

Second, I should tell you that our friend headed to Branson for not only our help--he had a couple of friends here that he was reaching out to.  We certainly cannot take the credit for helping him.  Which, is really funny that I'm even saying that--because GOD gets all the credit anyway.  This story is all about God's kindness and redemption.

Now, I've given you a whole lot of background information to tell you this:  The whole time our friend was staying with us, and getting his life back together, I felt this burden, this burning desire to be able to ENCOURAGE our friend...to TELL HIM just the right things that would make everything better...to COUNSEL HIM in just the way he needed to get healing.

But, guess what?

No matter HOW MUCH I prayed for God to give me the words to say to him...

No matter how many great things I thought of to tell him...

No matter how strongly I felt about certain things I wanted to ask him...

God kept telling me one thing:  Be quiet.  

Over and over again I felt God was telling me not to give one word of counsel, and even not to ask any leading questions.  I sensed God was telling me that this was Dave's time to counsel, and Dave's turn to talk and share in this particular situation.

Oh sure, I chatted with our friend a lot.  We talked every single day, and some days I even got to listen as he chose to share about his struggles.  We talked about books and movies and history and the South.  

I loved our daily chats.  But, so many times I felt helpless towards our struggling friend.  Here he was--living in our guest bedroom--and yet, I couldn't say anything or do anything to help him.

Ah.  But, one day, God helped me see how I COULD help our friend...how I already WAS helping our friend:  I could make him turkey sandwiches.

I'd already been feeding our friend daily, but just never thought of that as a way of helping.  But, God showed me that by FEEDING our friend, I was helping to FEED his SOUL.

From that day on, I saw my meal preparations as the way that I was helping our friend recover.  I was feeding his body, and his soul.

From that day on, I took great delight in piling on the turkey extra-high, as if our friend could feel my encouragement and love in those bites of turkey sandwiches.  I stopped feeling helpless in staying quiet, and started finding great joy in my daily meal (and turkey sandwich!) preparations.

How about you?  Do any of you find yourselves in a situation where you feel inadequate to help a friend or family member?  If so, I encourage you to look for ways different than just telling or counseling.

Sometimes, now matter what words you want to share--eloquent and sensible as they may be--sometimes, words fall upon deaf ears.

Sometimes, a friend isn't ready to hear.

Or, sometimes, someone else needs to do the talking and sharing.

Sometimes, the very best thing you can do--is make a nice, thick turkey sandwich.

I sure hope the next time you are preparing a meal--for your family, or for a friend--that you remember:  You're not just feeding a body; you may also be feeding a soul.

So, please be sure to pile on that turkey--extra high!

Christmas Memories and Crazy Gifts: Guest Post

I thought it would be fun this week between Christmas and New Year's to do something different.  I have asked a couple of my friends and family members to write a guest post about something holiday-related.  

Today, please welcome my dear friend Carissa, as she recalls some crazy gifts, and time with family at Christmas in Indiana.

Christmas to me equals family. And for years we spent Christmas with our extended family in Indiana.

I grew up with my Uncle Rich, my Aunt Andy and my cousin Jeff.

We were all a part of each other, my family and theirs, for as long as i can remember.  A big roaming, loving, laughing unit of 7.  We traveled together, we gathered together, we ate together, we played together, we swam together, we gambled together, we road tripped together, and we christmas-ed together.

I relish memories of my time with them through the years.

And I especially relish memories of my Aunt Andy and her crazy Christmas gifts.

I certainly can't remember the gifts exactly.  (Well, there was that red boa, and the Lilly family sweatshirts, and the crazy pajamas....those I remember.)

But what I mainly remember was the anticipation.  The anticipation of opening the Aunt Andy gift.  Because just like Aunt Andy herself, you knew the gift would be feisty and full of life, sassy and a little unrealistic, but CHOCK FULL of spunk and BRIMMING OVER with personality.  You'd have no idea what do with the gift after you'd opened it, but you wouldn't be able to wipe the happy smile off your face as it sat in your lap.

My Aunt Andy passed away about 5 years ago.  And life without her in our family has not been the same since.

I miss her smile, I miss her laugh, I miss her gifts, and I miss her bravado.

When I think of crazy christmas gifts, I think of Aunt Andy.

And I wish so much there would be one sitting under the tree this year.

But Christmas: Guest Post

I thought it would be fun this week between Christmas and New Year's to do something different.  I have asked a couple of my friends and family members to write a guest post about something holiday-related.  

Today, please welcome my dear friend Dawn, as she tells a little bit of what it was like growing up in a Christmas wonderland...

When I was little, Christmas at my house was always larger than life.  My parents didn't spoil us throughout the year; rarely giving in to our pleas for trinkets at every grocery store visit or trips to Gibson's 5&10. 

But Christmas.

Oh how I love the words, "but Christmas."  Christmas was a whole different story.  My parents love Christmas, and instilled in my sister and me a love for it, too.  A love that extends far beyond all the beautiful decor and presents. 

All through my growing up years, my family owned and operated a Christmas business.  Well, not totally a Christmas business, but that's what it was to me.  They imported and manufactured all sorts of display items, and Christmas decor was a huge part of their business.  As a little girl, I frequently went to work with my parents and found lots of places to hide and pretend among the thousands of square feet of showroom and warehouse.  There were Christmas trees decorated with every possible theme, twinkling lights by the millions, wreaths, garlands, glass balls, beads, beautiful ribbons, glitter by the pound and so much more.  I grew up in a Hobby Lobby/Michaels/Garden Ridge all wrapped up with a bow before those places had ever even hit the streets.

 

My Granddad, Big Daddy, as his grandkids called him, had a huge vision for the city of Dallas.  He loved sharing Christmas decor with the state of Texas, and he loved Santa Claus.  At that time, back in the early 80's, we had the largest Santa Claus statue in the world.  At least, in my opinion.  Every July a crane came to our building and hoisted that huge guy up in front of our storefront for every passing car to see.  He would stop traffic on the freeway.  People couldn't help but stare at that huge Santa in the middle of the Texas summer.  Christmas in July was a big deal in our business.  That's when all the buyers secured their orders for their own stores...we sold more Christmas trees in July than in November and December.  All because of the vision my Big Daddy instilled into my own daddy and his siblings.  

Many malls and corporate businesses would contract with us to decorate their lobbies or  their stores.  Some of my favorite Christmas memories are of my cousins and me running around stores and closed banks after hours, riding elevators and creating all sorts of chaos as my parents decorated for them.  My dad can bring a Christmas tree to life.  I've been lots of places and seen beautifully decorated trees, but truly, none compare to what my dad can do with a box of glass balls, some plaid ribbon and a well placed beaded garland.  He's got a talent all his own.  And I wish I had an ounce of his gift.  I don't.  I should have helped more when I was little.  I was too busy playing on the phone intercom at the store...always summoning my dad to the front counter in my commanding operator voice. 

My dad was the creative mind behind the company.  He had an eye for lovely things and could recreate something or pull it straight out of the air. Many decorations that we sold were his original creations and then the faithful servants in our warehouse manufactured them.  We sold to Branson shows before we even knew what Branson was.  Many shows still playing on the strip and some that have since closed were our customers.  And even a little theme park that is the staple in our town was a big customer of ours.  It's funny how life comes full circle like that.

 

As much as my family loved to bring the joy and the twinkle of Christmas into the Dallas area and beyond, they never failed to share why they celebrated the season.  To us, it wasn't the evergreens so creatively decorated.  It wasn't the beautiful wreath adorned with the golden bow.  It wasn't the garland lining the balcony nor was it the stockings that were hung by the chimney with care.  It was ALL about the baby.  The innocent baby that came to save us.  He saved our family.  He blessed us immensely.  He loved us unconditionally.  He gave us a full and abundant life.  That's what it is all about.  That's what my Christmas-laden family instilled in me.  

Oh how I wish I could adorn a tree like my dad.  But more than that, I hope I teach my children what my Big Daddy and his son taught me.  Jesus.  He really is all we need.  

What makes me smile?

These things make me smile...on a regular basis:

1.  Watching tourists walk around our downtown.  I love seeing their smiles, their hand-holding, and their leisurely pace.  Seeing them always reminds me to slow down, and enjoy more.

2.  When I hear my daughters' voices singing beside me at church.

3.  When I see someone walking a dog in a park, and having to pick up the (eek! fresh!) doggie poo.  (I'm sorry--I'm just being honest here.  I freely admit that my humor is on a junior high level.)

4.  When someone else's baby is screaming at the top of her lungs in Target.  Because I have BEEN THERE.  A LOT.  I usually try to give the frazzled mom an empathetic smile that says, "Hang in there, mama.  This phase will pass soon."

5.  When the "Hot Now" sign is lit at Krispy Kreme

6.  I smile even bigger when my husband turns the car into the parking lot.

7.  When I see an elderly couple holding hands tenderly.  Even better when he's holding her pocketbook.

8.  I also smile when I see an elderly man with a comb-over.

9.  Men with mullets also make me smile.  And I have to say--there are some mighty impressive mullets that come through our town.

10.  Groups of older women walking down the beach together.  There's nothing better than lifelong friendships.

11.  When my junior high daughter reaches out to hold my hand

12.  Miniature-sized things 

13.  When I see the verification phrase: "Prove that you're not a robot"

14.  When I get a new text notification

15.  When I see my husband snuggling with our daughters at bedtime, and telling them his Little Mouse stories.

16.  "Welcome to Florida" signs

 17.  Whenever we sing some of my old favorites at church:  Amazing Grace, Holy Holy Holy...and because of my 3rd grade Sunday School class--a rousing rendition of He Lives.

18.  Any Napoleon Dynamite quote

19.  Fresh falling snow

Camp's...Out...For...Winter!

In lieu of writing a blog post today, I played a little hooky.

You see--summer camp is over, and some of the staff I've worked alongside all summer is still here at camp with me, cleaning and putting away camp for the winter.  Tonight may be one of my FAVORITE nights all summer!

Here's why:

The last few of us left at camp shared a wonderful meal together, prepared by the talented, and ever-serving Josh.

Next, we headed out for an impromptu evening of swimming
There was lots of grinning and giggling...

And some hanging out

And a whole lot of sliding

And more giggling

And lots of splashing

And some yelling, and giggling, and snuggling...

It was a good, good night.

21 Years Ago...Wedding Pictures

Take a little journey back in time with me, if you would.  Today Dave and I celebrate 21 years together.  In honor of that celebration, I'd like to re-visit some of our wedding day pictures.

But, first, I must warn you:  The 1990s were in FULL EFFECT.  I'm talking big hair, big floral prints, big flowers.

Oh, but would you LOOK at that sweet, and YOUNG couple?  And, likewise, their YOUNG parents!

 

Oh, and how I love this next picture...my sweet grandmothers.  Boy, were we relieved when my Gram Young wore her pretty church shoes...instead of her big comfy tennis shoes, like she said she was going to wear.  I sure miss my grandmothers...

 

And take a look at these little cutie pies!  Now, they are beautiful grown women...

 

Please take note:  If I die anytime soon, I sure would like to have any of these musicans sing or play at my funeral.  They were AMAZING.   Plus, I loved them dearly.

 All right--BRACE YOURSELVES.  You are now about to enter a FLORAL DANGER ZONE!!!!!!  

Otherwise known as:  My bridesmaids.

Remember--it was the 1990s, when Laura Ashley, and bold floral Waverly prints were the style.  Oh, but each one of these girls was SO DEAR to me.  Even to this day, I love each of these girls dearly.  (Those are my 2 sisters to the left of me)

 

Now, brace yourselves for a whole buncha COOL DUDES.  (That's how we talked in the 90's)

I love these guys like brothers.  Well...one of them I don't love like a brother.  No siree--I love one of them not at ALL like my brother. (Uh, my husband!)

Seriously, Dave has some wonderful friends!

It's a CRYING SHAME these fellas didn't pose for their picture like they way they walked down the aisle. Those crazy guys decided NOT to wear SOCKS.  Well...except for the one who thought it would be funny to wear WHITE TUBE SOCKS.

 

Ah, and here is the whole wedding party.  This picture just makes me feel BLESSED to have such dear friends and family standing up with us that day.

 

This next picture is one of my favorites...  Plus, I really love trying to figure out who everyone is from the back of their heads.

 

This last picture, I leave you with a glimpse of Dave JUST BEFORE he walked out to marry his bride.  

As you can see...Dave was very nervous about getting married, and could think of nothing else before committing his life to me...His thoughts were consumed with the lovely bride about to walk down the aisle and put her hand in his...for rest of eternity...

Yep--Dave was CHOWING DOWN on a burger he had conned one of his friends into running out to purchase.  Even better is the fact that he is eating one of my all-time favorite burgers in town:  A Minute Man burger.

How fitting:  Because in about A MINUTE, he is about to get married.

Happy Anniversary,  My 11 Billion Minute Man!!!  

(Heck yeah I added it up!)

Weekend Adventures: Mary Poppins, Kids' Musical, and Running!

 I know I'm a day late and a dollar short on my weekend post here...but my bed was calling my name last night, and I obeyed.  May I just say that a good night of rest can do AMAZING things to a girl's day.  I woke up feeling so rested, and so ready to tackle today!  Note to self:  I need to get good rest more often.

We had a full weekend of fun adventures.  However, it didn't feel rushed and busy--it was just the perfect amount of fun adventures, and laid back weekend time.  I wish all weekends were that way.

We started off with a very fun 5K run--Run Like a Kid--benefiting Kids Across America Kamps.  It was organized by a friend of mine, and she did SUCH a great job on this inaugural event.  I sure hope she makes it annual.  It was a small race this year--which was so fun because we all knew each other.  Little secret here:  (shh!  don't tell!)  Knowing so many people also made me RUN FASTER...'cause you know...don't want anyone thinking I'm a slacker.

No, I'm not going to tell you my time.  I will tell you that I shaved 10 MINUTES off my last (and first) 5K.  However, I'm still slow.  I may start running a few bursts now and then to increase my speed just a bit.  That way, I won't be at the BACK of all the runners.

Sara Beth wanted to run, and ran the first half of the 5k.  I was so proud of her!!  Rebecca and a couple of her friends were asked to sing and dance--and I was equally proud of her, too!

After the 5K, all the kids gathered for a 1-mile fun run.  I LOVE living in a small town, where my kids can join in activities like this, and know half the kids.

 

Saturday night my friend Janna sent out a couple of Evites to celebrate her 37 1/3 birthday with dinner and a movie.  Dang--I forgot to give her 1/3 of a birthday present...  We sure did laugh a lot!  I love these girls!!!

Yeah, evidently, I did not get the  memo to wear black and grey...

Sunday morning, our girls participated in our church choir's Amazing Grace Race musical.  It really was a darling performance.  Rebecca sang such a beautiful solo!  All the kids sang beautifully--even down to the youngest soloist, little Leah!  So darling!!  It's neat watching these kids grow up, and hearing their voices mature through the years.

 

Right after the choir performance, we hopped in my mom's car and headed to Fayetteville.  My mom had given us tickets at Christmas to see the Broadway musical Mary Poppins.

We all agreed--Mary Poppins was one of the BEST musicals any of us have ever seen!!!  I would compare the quality of it to The Lion King.   

I can't imagine trying to write a stage musical to rival Disney's movie version of Mary Poppins.  The movie is pure magic.  I mean, how do you top Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews?  However, the musical was smart to be a little different than the movie (maybe it's more true to the book??), because the whimsy and "magic" in the set design, and the dazzling choreography kept delighting the audience as each scene unfolded. 

I love that "Nana" took her granddaughters to the musical, just like her mom, my Grammy, took my sister and me to our very first Broadway musical--Peter Pan (with Sandy Duncan).   I hope our daughters tuck away special memories like this into their hearts, just like I did as a young girl...in my black patent shoes dangling from the red velvet theater seat...

 

Sunday night, I could barely keep my eyes open after all the weekend adventures.  I sure hope your weekend was full of adventure, too.

Celebrating a Birthday...Airborne!

I want to give a birthday shout out to my sweet 12-year-old Rebecca!!!  Where have the years gone?  It seems like only yesterday I was holding a sweet little fuzzy blond-haired baby girl. 

Well...she wasn't all that little... (Click here if you want to read about Rebecca's birth story, as well as find out how much she weighed at birth.  I PROMISE you will not guess her birth weight...)

Dave and I prayed and prayed a long time for a baby.  Every day of her life--now for 12 years--we have thanked God for such a sweet blessing, our daughter, our Becca Boo.

To celebrate her last year as a pre-teen (sigh), we invited a couple of dear friends to go ziplining!  Because nothing says "Happy Birthday" like FLYING THROUGH THE AIR!

Sweet friends, and an adoring little sister who was thrilled to be included!

We started out at the Sky Surfer Zipline.  This is brand new to our town, and is the only one of its kind in the world!  I have to tell you--it is AMAZING!!!  We all LOVED it! 

Even I rode it--and I am afraid of heights.  I just hiked up my big girl pants, and decided I didn't want to miss out!  The fact that I could sit down on the "surf board" and hang on for dear life made it much easier.  I am SO GLAD I joined in!  I loved every second of my ride!!

Our Flight Instructor was amazing!  In fact, everyone at the Sky Surfer was all about good customer service!   (I promise they didn't pay me to say this!  They were just so friendly, and so helpful!)

 

You can even STAND UP on the Sky Surfer!  A couple of the girls--and Dave--literally surfed through the skies!

 

Next, on our airborne adventures was the Adventure Ziplines of Branson...

And, once again, the people there could not have been ANY nicer or more helpful!  (Big shout out thank you to Kate and Jared Story!!!)

I may have been a big girl at the Sky Surfer, but this spiral staircase at the entrance told me I would be the designated "picture taker" and "watcher." 

And, very contently, I sat in one of the rocking chairs on their back deck with Rebecca's Grandma and Grandpa, and sipped on a cold Coke while we enjoyed the GORGEOUS afternoon!

After a full afternoon of ziplining, and after a starving girls dinner at Freddy's, we loaded up and headed to our FAVORITE place for ALL celebrations--COLD STONE!!! 

What a sweet way (literally!) to end a fun day celebrating our Rebecca.

(Just so you know, no one paid me to say any of these nice things...but if they WANT to pay me--I would happily accept some cash-ola!  *grin*)

The Flip Flop Exchange: A FUN Way to Celebrate Spring!

Oh my word, I can hardly contain myself!  I am just sooo excited to tell you about my FAVORITE Spring Party!!!  I mean--picture this:  You've endured a long winter--this year much longer than usual.  You are sick and tired of the brown, dead grass in your yard, the barren branches overhead casting dismal shadows.  One day walking to the mailbox, you SEE it.  That teeny tiny green stalk peeking up from the ground!!! 

 And you feel like cheering.  Right there at the mailbox.  And doing a little jumpy dance.  Wheeeee!  Spring is a comin'!!!

 So, instead of the embarrassing jumpy dance, you know how I like to CELEBRATE Spring's arrival?  With a FLIP FLOP EXCHANGE party!!!

Because, what says SPRING better than a sassy Flip Flop???

 For the past 3 years, a group of my friends has gotten together in late March/early April for a Flip Flop Exchange Party.  It has gotten to be a real highlight for us each year...and has really grown in numbers.  You could use this idea for any women's group--a book club, a church women's group, a group at work, a neighborhood get-together...

 Here's how it works: 

1.  Pick a date.  For us, weeknights work best (free childcare, if Daddy keeps the kids!!)

2.  About 3 weeks ahead of your party date, send a mass e-mail to all the women you even think might be interested.  In your e-mail, tell the ladies about the Flip Flop Exchange idea, tell them the date of the party, and ask if they would like to come.  If they DO want to come, they need to do these things: 

-Reply to you (the party hostess) with your FLIP FLOP size (give closest WHOLE size, since most flip flops don't come in half-sizes)

-Start checking out fun flip flop shops--either in town, or online.  Be looking for a return e-mail, with your secret flip flop pal.

-Once you receive your Flip Flop Pal and her Flip Flop size (our group keeps our pals a secret until the party night), purchase a fun pair of flip flops that fit her personality--spending between $15-20.  (That is the limit our group sets.)

-On the party night, wrap up your flip flops--including a gift receipt (in case they don't fit). 

3.  This year, our Flip Flop Party hostess has really amped up  things.  Each of the attendees is bringing $2 to put towards 2 contests.  The first contest winner is awarded cash for bringing the CUTEST Flip Flops.  The other contest winner is awarded cash for bringing the best PERSONALITY MATCH for her Flip Flop Pal.  (The party attendees will vote on little slips of paper.)

 
4.  I love the contest idea!!!  Because some of the girls coming this year I don't know as well, it will be up to me to find out from others in the group the personality of my Flip Flop Pal...or I can always chat with the hostess, who knows everyone coming.  And WHO doesn't like winning a little CASH in a fun contest???Now, go ye out and planeth some Flip Flop Parties!!!!  I'd love to hear back from ya, if ya do!!!

True friendship is...

Someone who loves you through the thick, and the thin.

(And I'm not just talking about my waistline)

Someone who makes you laugh every single day.

Someone who laughs at you.

And even at your cornball jokes.

Someone who tells you the truth.

But also is totally on your side when you need it the most.

Someone who brings you the best chicken noodle soup of your life when you're sick.

And any leftover dessert--so we can gain weight together!

"Reply to All" e-mails.

And group text messages that make you giggle.

A traveling dress that is shared for special events.

And purses or necklaces offered up, too.

A picture-taker who never thinks one photo is enough.

And her friends who never move--because they know more shots are coming.

A large cherry Coke from Sonic on a difficult day.

An offer to come pick up your kids at a minute's notice.

Friends who stand beside you, no matter what the outcome.

And who pray for you, when you don't even know what to pray yourself.

Who know what you're thinking, without ever having to say a word.

Putting up with your weird quirks, and loving in spite of them.

Knowing when to send an encouraging text, and when to pick up the phone and call.

Not letting there be carnations on your coffin.

And making sure that coffin stays closed...unless I look really really good.

Not letting my widowed husband marry some hussy.

And making sure that hussy doesn't go through my things.

Taking care of my kids if something ever happens to me.

And making sure they know how much their mama adored them.

And not letting their fingernails or hair get too scraggly.

Someone who knows your deepest secrets.

And guards them forever.

Someone who has seen you at your worst.

And rejoices with you on your happiest days.

Someone you might not see as often anymore, but still knows you just as well.
